Yesterday we bumped into our neighbor Johnny. We were off to film something for Billy's site and ran into him outside our door. He quickly asked us if we wanted to come around later and talk about us going on his boat sometime. It was lovely to first of all meet him, and to be invited over was awesome. We tend to stay home often and although we know and love quite a few people in town, we have only been over to two people's houses.
So, later in the evening at around 8 I told Billy to go over and knock and see if they were still up for hanging out. He hesitated, as it was a bit late and he has kids, and we didn't want to impose. But off he went and a few minutes later came back and said ' let's go!' so I put my coat on and asked my Mum to watch Kaya.
We had a wonderful evening that lasted until midnight! Not only did we get to meet Johnny and his family but two French women who are in town to photograph the oil rigs. This was really special for me as I grew up in France and have wondered if my French has really gone downhill ( well it certainly hasn't gotten better) and to my amazement I had no problem speaking in it for the rest of the evening. It was so special and made me miss France, and the ladies were lovely! I'm sad there leaving this Friday, and jealous that they live in Paris!!!
We've had our ups and downs with living in the country. Some days are good and others...the quiet drives me insane. It is driving my Mom insane too, and so she keeps cleaning my house nonstop ( to my dismay) and commenting on the same things over and over. And over. The weather doesn't make going outside for long periods of time the most enticing thing to do. But she has met some lovely women in town and she is feeling more at home here.
It made me realize just how important having good friends are, and how feeling welcomed makes the world of difference. It's more that saying hello in the street, it's feeling like you are part of something bigger: a community. I have never had that before, and it is one of the reasons we have been searching for the right, open-minded and friendly place to live.
Happy soon to be Vday friends!!

Ah quelle belle soirée! :) Je ne savais pas que tu comprenais le français, mais j'aurais dû m'en douter puisque tu as grandi en Europe.
ReplyDeleteIt's true that having friends is important. I'm kind of missing that right now being full time in uni and doing my internship.

Salut Stephanie!! Je manque la France chaque jour!! But I must admit although I speak it decently my written is quite bad right now. I seriously need to read it more, yours is probably much better than mine :)
DeleteYes having true friends is SO important, and being in Uni or like us in a new place makes it a challenge for sure! Although I have noticed that if I go out of my way to talk with people ( instead of hope they will approach me) it has helped, here at least :)
